Aiken, South Carolina has long been known for its beauty and welcoming of visitors. In the late 1800s it began serving as a winter getaway for those from the north. Since then, visitors have enjoyed coming to Aiken all times of the year, and many, stay.
Aiken was named after William Aiken, the founder and President of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company. In 1833 the train brought its first passengers to the newly established town of Aiken.
After surviving the war, Aiken became known for its opportunities in equestrian sports. Today, Aiken harbors many equestrian communities and holds annual events such as Steeplechase, to show off its local stars.
With its historic downtown featuring single family cottages mingled with grand estates, boutique shops and corner cafes, Aiken holds something for everyone. Aiken offers beautiful parks, walking trails, activity centers, sporting events, arts, and more. If you feel like venturing away, Aiken is centrally located to some the souths most glorious beaches including Myrle Beach, Charleston, Hilton Head and Savannah. Atlanta and Charlotte are just a couple hours away as well.
Together, Aiken's historic charm, friendly faces, and beautiful scenes make it a great place to live, work, and play. An active, modern lifestyle drenched in Southern charm wrapped in a history that has been meticulously reserved.
